The Matrix: Quantum Multiverse?

I’ve hesitated to write anything about the Matrix, because there is no way to write about it without spoilers. But now two weeks later, between a variety of intelligent reviews, herehere and here, they’ve covered the ideas fairly well, but still seemed to have overlooked a couple of nuggets I think are there:

In the Architect scene, there were multiple interpenetrating TV screens, each a different quantum variation of Neo. And to add to the reality of it, these screens were not just images, we actually went through to an arbitrary one each time, for a total of 3 or 4 times during the scene. This implies that there might by an UNLIMITED number of matrix scenarios all being played out – akin to the “multi-worlds” interpretation of quantum theory. In other words, is the Matrix a large quantum computer? More importantly, is Zion, and all the rest, really on Earth at all, and not part of some larger simulation of things playing themselves out? Has a real physical earth ever existed at all? Could it not perhaps be some creation of a higher intelligence for its own amusement or purpose as yet incomprehensible?
